Microsoft bundles its classic offering of Data & Analytics solutions under the name "Microsoft Data Platform".
Microsoft's commitment has evolved over decades and now comprises three or four essential components:
The first two components comprise the classic on-premise solutions around Microsoft SQL Server and Power BI.
SQL Server in particular (we are only looking at the use of SQL Server in the context of analytical solutions here) has undergone enormous further development over many years. Today, SQL Server scales into areas that were reserved for specialists only a few years ago, and by adding Power BI, extensive analytical solutions can be realized for customers.
With the two additional components, Microsoft is consistently expanding its cloud presence under Azure.
While only some services were available under Azure at the beginning, Azure is now a pioneer in the provision of (among other things) analytical functionality in the cloud. The range of discrete analytical services in Azure, such as various databases, data integration, data catalog and Azure Data Explorer, is supplemented by Azure Synapse Analytics, an analytics service that integrates all the necessary components in one platform.
